WHAT YOU VISIT
Muroto UNESCO Global Geopark
Located on the tip of the Muroto Peninsula, the park not only showcases Kochi's natural beauty, but also its fascinating geological heritage. Muroto is a subduction zone: a place where one section of the earth's crust goes below another. It's here, where Shikoku collides with the Pacific Ocean in a spectacular coastline, that new land is formed. Long ago, as the plate beneath the Pacific Ocean sank, the land was gradually lifted up by large earthquakes and the rock formations left behind are a beautiful record of how the planet is always changing. A walk on the path offers views of rock formations that were lifted up from the sea floor, subtropical vegetation and underwater caves.

Mikurodo Cave
According to Buddhist legend, Kobo Daishi, one of the country's most revered religious figures, trained here in pursuit of enlightenment many times during his youth. It's said that the monk was so moved by the sky (Ku in Japanese) and the sea (Kai in Japanese) as he looked out from the cave and renamed himself "Ku-Kai." (It's prohibited to go into the cave).

Hotsumisakiji Temple
Established in the 9th century by Kobo Daishi, Hotsumisakiji is the 24th temple in the pilgrimage route of 88 temples established throughout Shikoku region. Located at the tip of Cape Muroto, it's believed that the revered monk and scholar founded the temple after achieving a spiritual awakening inside the Mikurodo Cave.

PHOTO OPPORTUNITY
From Hotsumisakiji Temple, you can walk to the historic lighthouse, in operation for over 100 years and one of the largest in Japan. Walk along the approximate one-mile-long stretch known as the Ransho Promenade for breathtaking views of the cliffs created by the pounding sea.

LUNCH
During the day, you'll stop for a Japanese meal that includes an appetizer, sashimi, tempura, rice, miso soup, and pickles (or similar).

WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
A lovely, picturesque motorcoach drive takes you 53 miles out of Kochi City to Cape Muroto in the eastern part of Kochi Prefecture. The cape's name translates to "blessed with great nature" and you'll agree when you see the cape jutting out over the Pacific Ocean, dividing the Kii Channel and Tosa Bay.
