What you will visit:
Nida (guided walk through center)
Though settled as early as 1385, the ever-shifting sands of Nida became popular in the late 19th century as a place for landscape artists and animal portraitists to gather. Located on the Curonian Peninsula, which is shared between Russia and Lithuania and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, the picturesque town features fishermen's cottages and red gabled buildings dotted along a lovely lagoon. Nearby lies the home of Nobel Laureate author Thomas Mann, who spent summers in the area in the 1930s.
Kazimieras Mizgiris Amber Museum and Gallery
Determined to bring amber to the forefront of art and design, Virginija and Kazimieras Mizgiris opened their museum and gallery in a converted fisherman's home in 1993. Today the gallery is host to a collection developed over 30 years. It boasts samples of a vast range of colors and sizes collected from the Baltic region and abroad. The museum is devoted to the history of Baltic amber, including its formation and ties to the belief that the resin possesses a curative power.
What you will see along the way:
Legend has it that the Curonian Peninsula was created by the giant Neringa, who poured sand between the lagoon and sea to protect the local fishermen. Today the area, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, stretches 97 kilometers and is shared by Russia and Lithuania. Forested dunes hug the sparkling lagoon, and the spires of the magnificent Lutheran church soar above the tiny town of Juodkrantė (Black Shore), the oldest village in the area.
Photo Opportunity:
Point your lens across the 52-meter high Great Dune, for panoramic views over the dunes and the town. From the Great Dune on a clear day you can also see the Russian territory of Kaliningrad. Then, in Old Town, 'Annchen von Tharau', the statue of the young girl who inspired a national poet to fall in love, can be found in Theatre Square.
