What you will visit:
Juodkrantė (Black Shore)Once located on the Baltic Sea shore, this tiny town of 720 people, the oldest fishermen's village on the Spit, was moved to its current location in the early 17th century in an effort to escape the shifting sand dunes and looming Black Death. A wealth of amber was discovered in the 1860s, and the area thrived under the mining operations employed to extract the fossilized treasure. Now Juodkrantė is a charming resort town, known for its classic red brick Evangelical Lutheran church, its sculpture gardens.
Witches Hill
Witches Hill earned its name from the pagan celebrations that take place among the tranquil pines during the Midsummer's Eve Festival. The forest trails are home to 80 exquisitely hand-carved wooden sculptures, each created by regional artists and depicting the folk and pagan characters of local legend. Each of the intricate carvings has its own story to tell, brought to life by knowledgeable, English-speaking guides.
