What you will visit:
Kretinga
One of the oldest towns in Lithuania, Kretinga has a long history with the Roman Catholic Church. The first wooden church was built in 1602, and today the majestic spire of the 17th-century Franciscan monastery and the church, with its unique stations of the cross and 400-year-old altar, soars above the quaint little town. The Kretinga Museum, located in the 19th-century manor house of the Tyszkiewicz family, was established in 1935.
Kretinga Historic Church
The Franciscan monks who inhabited Kretinga were credited with opening the area's first school and making significant contributions to education and publishing. The monastery, which was closed for years during the tsarist and Soviet regimes, reopened in 1992 and offers a unique glimpse into the history of the order. The 400-year-old main altar in the church has been restored to its original glory and is said to possess healing powers. The church offers the opportunity to walk the stations of the cross and visit the crypts buried under the main altar.
Count Tyszkiewicz 19th-Century Estate
Kretinga Museum
The extensive collection of pieces, largely cultivated from 1956 to 1975 with the help of historian Juozas Mickevičius, contain folk sculptures rescued from destroyed churches as well as religious artifacts, alongside the tools, household items of everyday life in historic Kretinga.
What you will see along the way:
Your return drive takes you through Klaipeda's central streets which reveal a glimpse into the history of Lithuania, including the time spent under Soviet rule. Discover the Clock and Watch Museum, the Park of Sculptures, a neo-Gothic post office and Klaipeda University, which is housed in a converted military barracks.
Refreshment:
On the grounds of Count Tiskevicius's 19th-century estate you'll find a former Water Mill, the first hydroelectric power plant in Lithuania. The water mill house is also know for its candy and chocolate workshop, which were opened in the mill during the interwar period by count Tiskevicius. Today you will be offered a cup of coffee, special Count's chocolate and a piece of Lithuanian cake in a former Water Mill, which now houses a cozy family owned cafe.
