What you will visit:
Klaipeda - Old Town (walking tour)
Founded in 1252 by Teutonic knights under the name 'Memelburg,' Klaipėda is the oldest city in Lithuania. The influence of German design is exhibited along the cobbled streets of the Old Town and the 18th-century buildings of the crafts yard, home to the city's artisans and considered the cultural center of the area. The city's passion for statuary is on full display here, with the little boy of the famed 'Childhood's Dream' waving his hat to the passing ships alongside his canine companion. Dogs, cats and mice are immortalized in bronze alongside their human counterparts in artwork scattered throughout the city.
Amber Museum and Botanical Park in Palanga
Amber has long-held strong ties to this area of the Baltic coast, and the stunning museum at Palanga boasts some 28,000 samples of this fascinating fossil. Housed in a restored 19th-century palace, the museum includes 15 rooms dedicated to permanent exhibits and an additional area in the chapel to feature temporary displays. The museum is set on the grounds' lush botanical park, which is home to over 600 imported and native plant species.
What you will see along the way:
A sculpture of Antanas Poska, the biker who travelled from Lithuanina to India on motorcycle, greets you at the entrance to this charming area. It is the first of a trove of sculptural treasures spread throughout the cobbled streets. 'Annchen von Tharau', the statue of the young girl who inspired a national poet to fall in love, can be found in Theatre Square by the neoclassical marvel that bears the Klaipeda coat of arms. Artisans have made their home in the converted 18th-century fachwerk warehouses of the crafts yard, and a visit to the amber market is the perfect place to hunt for souvenirs.
