Board your coach for the approximately 30-minute drive to Kaohsiung Martyr's Shrine, which was originally the Japanese-built "Takao Kotohira Shrine", but was rebuilt, with the addition of a mountain gate, main hall, the front hall, corridor and pavilion, with golden glazes tiles traditionally used Chinese temples, filled with a solemn, imposing atmosphere. The front of the Shrine is covered in greenery and embrace the fantastic, the beautiful scenery of the harbor view.
Continue to Lotus Lake for a closer look at Taiwan's gift for synthesizing old and new. The pagodas, pavilions and temples are all examples of classical architecture, yet the oldest dates to 1951. During your visit, explore the Spring and Autumn Pavilions dedicated to the God of War and completed in 1951. The graceful Dragon and Tiger Pagodas feature interiors decorated with paintings depicting "China's 24 Obedient Sons."
Tzu-Chi temple is a magnificent Taoist shrine. The interior is filled with phantasmagorical depictions of the pantheon of Taoist deities. Those deities include both divinely-born gods, as well as major historical figures.
Board a ferry for the short cruise to Chijin Island, enjoying views of the city's soaring skyline. Chijin Island is the city's oldest district and was occupied by the Dutch in the 17th century. Seafood restaurants and small shops line the island streets. Chijin is also home to Taiwan's second-oldest lighthouse, built by an Englishman in 1883. The remains of Western influence can be seen at the island's Christian church. Enjoy free time to shop for souvenirs and visit the fish stalls before returning to the ship.
