WHAT YOU WILL VISIT:
Yakcheonsa Temple
Surrounded by lush trees and foliage, ornate Yakcheonsa Temple was built in 1981 and constructed in the style of the early Joseon Dynasty. A landmark of Seogwipo City, the temple is the largest in Asia and stands an impressive 98 feet (30 meters) tall. Step inside to the main hall and note the drum tower and the bell tower, as well as an 18-ton bell and the 16-foot (5-meter) tall Vairocana Buddha, which proudly sits on a pedestal flanked by large rattan flowers and golden dragons. The structure also holds residential quarters for the monks, and the grounds contain charming stone statues and meditative views. A mineral-water spring flows year-round, and the name of the temple is derived from the Korean word for "divine waters with healing powers."
Oedolgae Rock
Standing an impressive 65 feet (20 meters) tall, Oedolgae Rock, which translates to "lone rock pillar," is dramatically situated against the sweeping backdrop of the sea, neighboring Bum and Sae Islands, and Seonnyu (fairy) Rock. Fans of the 2003 TV drama series "Daejangguem" will recognize the rock as one of the show's filming locations.
Lee Joong-seop's Art Street
Paying homage to the beloved Korean artist Lee Joong-seop (1916-1956), known for his oil paintings and drawings, this colorful street features the Lee Joong-seop Gallery, which displays one of the paintings he created when living locally, titled "Illusion of Seogwipo." It depicts beautiful nature, trees, birds and a warm sun. Additionally, the Lee Joong-seop Gallery Creativity Studio and an outdoor area showcase more of his work as well as cafés and shops.
WHAT YOU WILL SEE ALONG THE WAY:
Spectacularly beautiful, Jeju, which means "Island of the Gods," is Korea's largest island. Its stunning scenery and host of natural wonders add to its charms. Admire the dramatic rocky coastline, white-sand beaches, sparkling waterfalls, and lush, verdant countryside as you travel. The island's warm climate, friendly locals and picture-perfect landscapes have rightfully earned its reputation as a premier honeymoon spot. Seogwipo has a compact urban center and an expansive coastline. The prominent Hallasan Mountain is a prized natural landmark, as are the waterfalls, rock formations and picturesque views that surround the southernmost city in Korea.
SHOPPING:
Local delicacies as far as the eye can see greet visitors at Seogwipo Maeil Olle Market, a bustling indoor marketplace established in the 1960s. From premium produce and seafood to colorful souvenirs, the stalls, tended by friendly locals, brim with delights.
