Your excursion into the westernmost city in Europe begins at the Ísafjördur Harbor where you'll board your motorcoach for a scenic drive to Bolungarvik, a quiet, little village that lies on a picturesque bay surrounded by steep mountains.
Your first stop is the pastoral church in Bolungarvik. Named Hólskirkja, "the church on the hill," it sits in an evergreen valley with the ever-present snow-tipped mountains slumbering behind and surrounded by a dreamy landscape of grass, moss and, depending on the time of year, the Arctic poppy. Designed by Rögnvaldur Ólafsson, named Iceland's first architect, the church was built in Norway and transported to Iceland over a hundred years ago and placed on the same spot on the hill where churches have stood since the year 120045
Continue to Osvör museum and Fisherman´s hut. The museum´s curator, dressed in traditional Icelandic fishing garments, will give a realistic picture of how local fishermen made their living off the seas during the beginning of the 20th century. Prior to the huts restoration in 1988, they were used to harbour rowing boats. See a replica of one of these rowboats which is amongst the oldest of its kind in the country.
Enroute back to the charming village of Isafjordur, you´ll have photo opportunities of the idyllic Seljalandsdalur, a glaciated river valley with gentle slopes and the stunning waterfall Seljadalsfoss. Isafjordur, the capital of the Westfjords region, is a cozy town on the edge of the Arctic wilderness where the sun disappears below the horizon.
Your final stop is the Maritime Museum in Isafjordur located in Nedstikaupstadur, which houses some of the oldest buildings in Iceland. In the museum and the area around it you can find all and everything concerning the fish, the fishing, the industry, old production equipments – everything from a simple fish hook to a ship. Have a taste of Icelandic refreshments of schnapps, dried fish or shark while browsing around the museum.
