Tequila has long been considered Mexico's national drink and plays an important role in Mexican culture. Learn the history of this spirit's complexity and its journey from agave field to cocktail glass. Then taste several different varieties on this approximately three-hour tour.
Tequila's legacy goes far beyond the margarita. Two thousand years ago, the Aztec people in ritual ceremonies used a fermented sprit made from the agave plant; the Spanish conquistadors took a liking to it and began to distill agave themselves. In the 16th century, the town of Tequila became the most well-known producer, and the drink's reputation spread throughout Mexico. In the 1800s, tequila was imported to the United States, and its popularity grew.
A short drive brings you to a local restaurant for your demonstration and tasting. During the demonstration, you'll learn that Mexico produces four different varieties of tequila: Reposado (rested), Añejo (aged), Blanco (white), and Oro (gold).
By law, tequila is required to contain at least 51% agave, and tequilas labeled premium must contain 100% agave.
Mezcal, on the other hand, is a distilled alcoholic beverage made from another type of agave called the maguey plant. Infused with a smoke flavor and aged in barrels, it is consumed straight, or it can be infused with flavors of fruits, herbs or honey.
After your brief history lesson, those 21 and up will have the opportunity to taste some of Mexico's best tequila and mezcal. (Drinking tequila in Mexico is an art form, and the best tequilas are often sipped.)
Conclude the day with an hour of independent exploration of the authentic town of La Crucecita. Spend your time strolling through this charming enclave known for its central plaza, colorful marketplace, and quaint shops. The tree-shaded streets are lined with boutiques with locally made handicrafts, and the cafes are the perfect spot to relax and immerse yourself in the cultural atmosphere.
Return to your transportation at the designated time for a quick drive back to port.
