An unforgettable encounter with nature awaits when you discover the lush landscapes of Oaxaca on a scenic 85-minute drive to La Ventanilla, a renowned ecotourism center and indigenous village of Zapotec origin.
La Ventanilla, nestled between the Sierra Madre del Sur and the Pacific Ocean, is home to a petite village of 25 Zapotec families dedicated to preserving both the beach and lagoon. The lagoon is flanked by red and white mangroves, and the tannins extruding from the roots of the red mangroves are responsible for turning the water a reddish color in the shallow ends and black in the deeper areas. Much wildlife calls the area home, and the lagoon is filled with the sounds of kingfishers, ducks, herons and woodpeckers calling from the trees. This conservation area, with abundant vegetation, provides a refuge to all kinds of animals, including many iguanas, raccoons, freshwater turtles, white-tail deer, crustaceans and of course the protected Mexican crocodiles, which move silently throughout the lagoon.
Upon arrival at this serene setting, meet your naturalist guide and board a canoe for a ride through this lush paradise. As you glide along, keep your camera at the ready because this natural habitat offers a wonderful opportunity for nature photography.
Your boat ride will take you to a secluded island where tree nurseries have been developed to help reforest affected areas. Here, your guide will prepare a light snack of quesadillas cooked on an open-air oven for you to enjoy in this picturesque setting.
At the end of this scenic day, travel back to the mainland in your canoe and meet your transportation back to port.
