What you will visit:
Bay Front Black Sand Beach
This dazzling stretch of black sand is actually made of both black lava as well as what is called green sand. The green sand is actually olivine crystals and is striking against the bright blue waters.
Rainbow Falls and Banyan Tree
You'll want to have your camera at the ready at Rainbow Falls, an 80-foot-tall cascade surrounded by tropical flora. Nearby, a massive banyan tree, with its huge, glossy leaves, is truly awe-inspiring. The tree is 500-600 years old and so overrun by its figs and their vines hanging down from its branches that the tree trunk is completely covered.
What you will see along the way:
Your scenic drive takes you into and around the best of Hilo, driving down the coast along tree-lined Banyan Drive and past luxury resorts and Liliuokalani Garden, the largest Japanese-style garden outside of Asia. Your route takes in the iconic King Kamehameha Statue, immortalizing Hawaii's most beloved hero, who conquered and unified the Hawaiian Islands and established them as a royal kingdom in 1810, and sparkling Hilo Bay.
Treats:
Sample wonderful chocolates and sweets at Big Island Candies. At the Moana Loa Macadamia Nut Visitor Center shop for Hawaii's most iconic treats. At the local farmer's market, refresh with tropical fruits brimming with natural goodness.
