Discover Berlin's fascinating history and vibrant culture on this full-day tour that features both a motor coach tour and a scenic river cruise.
A brief transport to the train station in Hamburg followed by a 2.5 - 3 hour train ride begins the day.
Upon arriving, you'll meet your guide and board your motor coach for a comprehensive tour of the German capital. Your tour of Berlin showcases a revitalized city while being reverent to its past. There are photo opportunities around every corner, and your guide will stop for several key landmarks.
Begin driving by the old Nikolai Quarter, where the city of Berlin was founded and located close by is the Red Town Hall, the current seat of the city's government. Keep your camera ready for Checkpoint Charlie, the former border control point separating east and west, and for some East Germans, a gateway to freedom. Soviet and American tanks briefly faced off at this location during the Berlin Crisis of 1961. Next, you will stop at the most famous sight of Berlin's history: the remnants of the Berlin Wall.
You'll pass Unter den Linden, a tree-lined, east-west thoroughfare through the city of Berlin, and witness such sights as the State Library, and Humboldt University, Berlin's oldest University, your way to the next highlight, the Brandenburg Gate. As the only remaining city gate of Berlin, formerly exemplifying the separation of the city between East and West Berlin, the Brandenburg Gate has now come to symbolize German unity.
Just a short stroll away is the Reichstag. Originally constructed to house the parliament of the newly founded German Empire, the contemporary glass dome designed by architect Sir Norman Foster is one of the city's major landmarks today.
Next, you'll head to a traditional beer-style German restaurant where a lunch awaits you. After a delicious meal, it's all aboard for a scenic motor-launch cruise along the Spree River, taking in the sights and sounds of the capital from the water. The route passes through the inner city, giving you a view of Museum Island, the Berlin Cathedral and the Reichstag. Also in view, is the impressive Chancellery.
You'll board your motor coach and drive by the Victory Column, a landmark that celebrates the military successes of Prussia over Denmark, Austria and France, and pass Bellevue Palace, the official headquarters of the President of Germany. Also on your route is the Congress Hall.
Now it's time to shop 'til you drop on Kurfurstendamm, Germany's most famous shopping boulevard. You're free to stroll along the broad, tree-lined avenue, boasting luxury department stores, designer boutiques, shops, cafes, clubs and restaurants.
When it's time to call it a day, you'll travel back to the train station. Enjoy on your return train ride back to Hamburg. A quick coach transfer takes you back to the ship.
