Chocolate, 'the elixir of the gods,' is one of the world's most beloved flavors. Germany boasts the second-highest chocolate consumption in the world, just slightly below Switzerland. Chocolate is engrained in many cultures and is often a part of festive celebrations and traditions. It's amazing how a little cocoa bean can produce such a mighty and intoxicating flavor! German chocolate ranks with Belgian and Swiss as the finest in the world, and your tour of Chocoversum, a chocolate museum and tasting parlor, is one of the sweetest ways to learn the chocolate-making process while sampling some of the delectable candy.

Join your guide on a coach ride tour through the streets of Hamburg's Harbor City district to see the warehouse complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. One of the most significant historical ports, the district epitomizes strength and vitality with its red-brick buildings, architectural detailing and Old World meets New World atmosphere. You'll see the Kesselhaus information center, formerly a boiler house that dates back over 150 years, the tranquil canals, the graceful bridges and the Elbphilharmonie Concert Hall, a new cultural and urban landmark that is destined to become known for its monumental design aspirations.

Your destination is the Chocoversum, where wafts of heavenly chocolate beckon you inside. Your specialized in-house guide is a chocolate expert who delights in teaching you the process from cacao bean to bar. See the historical chocolate-making machines from the 1950s and 1960s and learn time-honored methods for producing the smoothest, richest chocolate delights. After your education, you'll have an opportunity to produce your own one-of-a-kind chocolate bar in the in-house manufacturing facility. Watch the machines transform the chocolates from the melting process to the artful wrapping of the bars. Then, let your imagination run wild with favorite ingredients, such as nuts, German Haribo gummy bears and sprinkles as well as exotic additions like rose petals and pink peppers.

Conclude your adventure at the enticing specialty shop, where you'll find both local and international chocolate treats. From pralines and spiced chocolate to grilling sauce with cocoa, if it contains chocolate, this shop carries it. Novelty items include Monopoly games made of chocolate; tea and beer with cocoa aroma; and a large selection of beauty products made from therapeutic cacao butter. Want to take the experience home with you? You'll find recipe books, ingredients and tools so you can try your hand at chocolate making back home!

Enjoy the sights and chat with your fellow chocolate connoisseurs as you make your way back to port.
