Tunnels, Tales and Mysteries of Georges Island

Discover the mysteries of Georges Island, a National Historic Site, a hidden gem within Halifax Harbour. For centuries it has been shrouded in a rich tapestry of history and folklore and for nearly 200 years played a pivotal role in military activities as well as serving as a prison during the deportation of Acadians from 1755 and 1763, a quarantine station, and a 1700s Aboriginal fishing camp. Georges Island is also home to one of Canada's oldest lighthouses, originally constructed in 1876. In 1749, when British settlers founded Halifax, the island's strategic importance surged as the harbor's safeguard against potential threats. The star-shaped Fort Charlotte, commissioned by Prince Edward the Duke of Kent, is a remarkable structure that can still be explored today. Upon arrival, you'll wander through its fortifications, including its defense walls, Martello tower, lighthouse, labyrinth of tunnels, and underground quarters, as your guide shares tales of adventure and intrigue. Return to port via the ferry after this fascinating day.

What you will see along the way:

Your ferry ride to Georges Island is the perfect opportunity to see Halifax from a unique vantage point. Known as the City of Trees, lovely Halifax boasts a modern harbor and significant international port. The historic properties on Halifax's waterfront showcase restored Victorian-façade warehouses dating back to the late 1700s. Beautiful at any time of year, Halifax's surrounding scenery of windswept beaches and iconic eastern seaside vistas charm all who gaze upon her shores. Once returned to the mainland feel free to meander the boardwalk on your own as you make your way back your ship.
