Nature lovers will thrill to the opportunity to discover the unspoiled beauty of southeast Alaska's environs during a 3.5-hour excursion to one of the area's most pristine locations.

Stretching out over a mile, Battery Point Hiking Trail is a moderately strenuous adventure designed for the whole family and children as young as eight. Wildlife sightings are common and you may see eagles, waterfowls, whales, seals, bears and moose so be sure to bring along your camera to capture every memorable moment.

After you've dressed in layers and put on your comfortable closed-toe hiking boots you'll climb aboard your transport for a scenic, narrated drive through Haines. Sit back and relax as your onboard guide regales you with tales of history as you make your way through Fort Seward, known as the last of a series of military posts established in Alaska during the gold rush era. Decommissioned in 1947, it houses art galleries, restaurants, a replica Tlingit clan house and a center for Native arts.

Then, your driver will head out of town for the short drive to Battery Point Hiking Trail, tucked inside 6,000-acre Chilkat State Park, the state's largest park.

Once you disembark at the trailhead you'll set out on a three-hour hike. Breathe in the fresh air and marvel at the scenery as you follow your guide through a centuries-old forest of spruce trees that parallels the shoreline.

Along the way, your guide will gladly share information about the area and explain Native Alaskan uses for the various plants encountered on the trail.

As the trail slowly rises the sensational panorama of snow-capped mountains and the town of Haines come into view. From this vantage point you can even see Chilkat Inlet to the south and Chilkoot Inlet to the north.

The rocky forest trail, broken with dense tree roots, leads down to a pebbled beach - the perfect spot for a leisurely picnic snack of delicious smoked salmon, cheese and crackers and refreshments. As you stand on the beach keep your eyes open for seals, sea lions and the telltale blows or flukes of humpback whales.

After lunch you'll hike along the same scenic route and rejoin your transport. Then, you'll return to the pier with a camera filled with memories of your lovely and informative day, to be shared with family and friends.
