Alaska Raptors & Bald Eagle Foundation (Wheelchair Accessible)
Wheelchair Accessible
Easy Activity
Be sure to read the Special Notes further down this page for important requirements and restriction.
From 1917 to 1953 more than 100,000 bald eagles were killed in Alaska prompting the Endangered Species Act of 1973. Since 1996, the American Bald Eagle Foundation has been dedicated to the protection and preservation of the bald eagle's habitat through its educational and research activities. Come face-to-face with eagles, falcons and other birds of prey during a two-hour excursion that begins with a tour of Haines.
To thoroughly enjoy the experience, be sure to wear comfortable clothing and shoes and bring along a camera to capture each memorable moment (however, flash photography may be limited with certain raptors.)
From the pier you'll set out in quaint school bus style transportation and travel through the charming streets of Haines, founded by Presbyterian missionaries in 1881 and once a supply center for prospectors heading to the Yukon in search of gold.
Your onboard guide will regale you with tales of history as you make your way through Fort Seward, known as the last of a series of military posts established in Alaska during the gold rush era. Decommissioned in 1947, it houses art galleries, restaurants, a replica Tlingit clan house, and a center for Native arts.
From here you'll make a photo stop at Picture Point, which offers a dazzling panorama of majestic snow-capped mountains and never-ending sky.
Continuing on you'll reach the American Bald Eagle Foundation, home to a Natural History Museum and Live Raptor Center. After a tour through the Alaska natural history displays in the Interpretive Wildlife Center you'll be introduced to one of the many well-trained handlers who will offer an overview of North American raptors such as bald eagles, owls, hawks and falcons. Learn how their excellent eyesight, sharp talons, and hooked beaks have earned them the moniker "birds of prey" and how Alaska's flyways and skyways help in the birds' migration.
After some free time in the gift shop you'll rejoin your coach for an enjoyable scenic drive back to Haines ready to begin your next adventure.
