Kayaking Adventure
Explore the beauty and wonder of Grand Cul-de-Sac Marin Nature Reserve from the seat of a kayak on an up-close and personal tour of the tranquil waterways protected by a giant coral reef (25 km long). The Grand Cul-de-Sac Marin lies in the heart of the northern side of Basse-Terre. Designated a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, this natural sanctuary is surrounded by crystalline waters teeming with marine life-turtles, colorful fish, corals, starfish, coastal mangroves, and marine birds.
What you will see along the way:
With its soaring peaks and the active La Soufrière volcano, Basse-Terre is the more spectacular of Guadeloupe's two butterfly islands. Dense rainforest scenery, charming fishing villages, seaside towns and endless stretches of banana and sugarcane plantations reach out to the golden coast. Discover indigenous flora and fauna and learn about the natural ecology of the mangroves as you glide through the Grand Cul-de-Sac Marin Nature Reserve. Four species of mangrove dominate this ecosystem, creating a dramatic forest growing on tall stilts. Additionally, you'll find a myriad of coastal features. Mango Islet is home to a variety of birds that make their homes in the reeds, the shallows are populated with starfish, sea urchins and sea cucumbers, and La Biche Islet, favored by generations of fishermen, is one of the more beautiful islets of the lagoon.
