What you will visit:
Botanical Gardens of Deshaies
The lovely 17-acre Jardin Botanique de Deshaies on the northwest coast of Basse-Terre is home to exquisite specimens of the rich flora of the Caribbean islands. Famous for having been the property of French comedian Coluche and designed by renowned landscape architect Michel Gaillard, it is designated as an exceptional flower and animal park and a listed Remarkable Garden. The colors and tropical fragrances of the islands are found in a series of collections. Along manicured pathways, find a celebration of West Indian flora and fauna, admire delicate orchids, hibiscus, heliconia and other blooms, and wander through an avenue of tree ferns and along a palm grove. A lily pond filled with koi fish is complemented by an aviary that is home to colorful lorikeets, an arboretum and a waterfall that cools the pink flamingos that enjoy its refreshing spray.
Beach Break
Across the Guadeloupe archipelago there are over 270 beaches, each as pretty as the next. The beaches of Deshaies are as picturesque as any other on the island, with their golden or white sand, mountainous views and cooling palms stretching out for miles. Some of the beaches lie within a protected reef, so the waters are calm, while others have a rougher surf and caution should be used when swimming. Wear your swimsuit under your clothes and don't forget sun protections.
What you will see along the way:
With its soaring peaks and the active La Soufrière volcano, Basse-Terre is the more spectacular of Guadeloupe's two butterfly islands. Dense rainforest scenery, charming fishing villages, seaside towns and endless stretches of banana and sugarcane plantations reach out to the golden coast. A scenic drive reveals all its beauty, and the changing light and frequent rainbow sightings heighten the experience.
