Panoramic Driving Tour
For almost 500 years, explorers, merchants and pirates have long favored Turks and Caicos's treasured isle for its turquoise waters, powder-soft beaches and abundance of sun. Cockburn Town, also referred to as Grand Turk, is the capital city of the Turks and Caicos Islands and has served as the seat of government for the islands since 1766. Located on the west coast of Grand Turk Island, the town has an eclectic mix of architecture, with older structures showcasing influences from the British colonial style and many of them renovated and restored.
Turks and Caicos National Museum
Housed within one of the oldest stone buildings on the island, dating to the early 19th century, the Turks and Caicos National Museum displays an array of artifacts relating to the island's fascinating natural history and cultural heritage, tracing the diverse settlers from Taíno, African, North American, Bermudian, French, and Latin American backgrounds, all drawn to the island's shores. Its highlight is the remains of a ship from the Molasses Reef Wreck, dating to the early 1500s, the oldest excavated European shipwreck in the New World. The museum also houses a 3-D coral reef exhibit, a gallery dedicated to the island's involvement in the American space program, and a fascinating look at messages in bottles that have been found on Grand Turk's sandy shores. A well stocked gift shop with a wide selection of souvenirs from around the Turks and Caicos Islands.
Governor's Beach
Part of the Columbus Landfall National Park, Governor's Beach, situated on the island's west coast, is considered the island's most beautiful stretch of sand. It has low, rolling waves and a lush casuarina tree grove, which offers shade and shelter from the winds. Governor's Beach gets its name from the governor's mansion, which is just a short distance away from the main beach entrance. Complimentary Wi-Fi, beach chairs and shade will be provided. Also, a delightful local snack is provide during the beach break. A great selection of souvenirs are available here as well.
