A flourishing maritime metropolis immediately after its founding in 1621, Gothenburg's success could be attributed to the canals that were built by the Dutch who designed them to resemble those back in Amsterdam. A moat, along with a 22-foot-tall defensive wall, made Gothenburg one of Northern Europe's most fortified cities. Although the wall has long since disappeared the moat and canals still remain. And one of the best ways to soak up the city's sights is with a three-hour kayaking adventure along these 17th century waterways.
Whether you're a novice or a pro, you're sure to appreciate discovering picturesque Gothenburg from a completely different point of view.
Since you'll be out on the water, it's important that you be comfortable so to prepare for your unforgettable excursion, make sure to bring along a waterproof jacket, hat, sunglasses and adequate sun protection. Bring a camera along, too, to capture each memorable moment.
After boarding your transportation at the pier it's just a 30-minute ride to the Kayak Center at Lilla Bommem harbor. Here, you'll meet your friendly and knowledgeable guide who will instruct you on how to properly handle your kayak, use your paddles and how to enter and exit the kayak from the dock. After your short instructional briefing and lesson in paddling techniques, you'll don your safety jacket and be assigned to a one or two man kayak.
Once you master your lessons, your guide will lead you to the eight-mile-long moat known as the Säveån. Then, feel the centuries slip by as you slowly make your way down this once strategically valuable waterway and through the historic city center.
Then, you'll make your way down the city's canals, under bridges and past a number of memorable landmarks so have your camera handy.
Out on the water, you'll have a total of two-and-a-half-hours to soak up the sun, feel the breeze on your face and gaze at the spectacular sights that line the shore.
When your glorious day on the water comes to an end, you'll paddle your way back to Lilla Bommem harbor and meet your transportation and be escorted back to your ship ready to plan your next adventure.
