Old Town – The city's 1,000 years of history have left a rich collection of buildings and monuments designed in a splendid mix of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque style. Although the Old Town of Gdansk is not as old as it might seem, since over 80% of the buildings were rebuilt after the devastation of World War II, it has been completely and lovingly restored to its 16th-century glory. To get a falvor of this ancient city, follow the royal route from the Green Gate on the banks of Motlawa, which takes in Long Streed (Ul.Dluga) and Long Market (Dlugi Targ) with its town houses spanning 400 yeas, the main town hall, Arthur's court (museum) and the representative symbol of Gdansk- the Neptune Fountain. The most charming street in Gdansk is St. Mary Street which delights its' visitors with its lively atmosphere, quaint shops and lovely terraced buildings.
St. Mary's Church – often called the "Crown of Gdansk" is the world's largest brick temple. Its' mighty walls and towers rise high above the city skyline and the beautiful view of the city can be enjoyed from the galleries of the impressive 82 meter high tower. With its 30 decorated chapels, polyptych, ancient tombs and 15th cenutry astronomical clock, this medieval church can accommodate even 25,000 worshippers and took 159 years to build. Its deceivingly plan exterior belies a bright, spacious interior with large windows creating at the same time magical atmosphere that makes the visit an unforgettable experience.
Oliwa Cathedral – Located on the grounds of an old Cistercian monastery, the Oliwa Cathedral dates back to the 13th century. When the Gothic interior was extremely damaged in a 1577 fire it was replaced with the Baroque fixtures that we admire today for their beauty and intensity. This is why, the façade is a striking composition of two slim octagonal Gothic towers with a central Baroque portion wedged between them. The interior makes an impression of very long, mainly because of the unusual proportions of the building – the nave and chancel together are 90m long but only 8.3m wide. Built along a classic three-aisle design with a vaulted basilica and shaped in the form of the Latin cross, today's interior is dominated by the extraordinary organ over the main entrance. The impressive complex of three pipe organs consists of 7,876 tin and wooden pipes which can imitate various sounds. When built, the instrument was the largest in Europe.
