Discover the charm and beauty of Fortaleza, the capital city of the State of Ceará and one of Brazil's most popular seaside destinations. Blessed with stunning beaches and brimming with rich Brazilian culture, the nation's fifth largest metropolitan area offers a wealth of experiences.

Begin your tour with a narrated drive from the pier learning fascinating facts along the way. Despite being one of the smallest states in Brazil, Ceará has one of the longest coastlines in the country and some of the nicest urban beaches in Brazil! The majority of the hotels, businesses and restaurants are concentrated on the avenue that hugs the sea front which is the true center of life for the Cearense people.

The old lighthouse of Mucuripe will capture your attention as you drive by this important landmark. Built by slaves between 1840 and 1846, the "Eye of the Sea" guided ships into the harbor until 1957. More recently it has served the city as a Museum exhibiting documents, photos, drawings, and accounts by travelers, all related to the Colonial times of the city. And you'll notice a number of modern wind turbines that provide electric power to the port.

A visit to the Metropolitan Cathedral of Fortaleza, begun in 1939 and dedicated in 1978, was designed by French architect George Mounier. Marvel at the mixture of architectural styles from the spear-shaped towers reminiscent of Europe's Gothic cathedrals to the main square-shaped cupola drawn from ancient Roman design. The third largest church in Brazil, it can accommodate 5,000 people within its stately walls.

Continuing to the José de Alencar Theatre, you'll have the opportunity to tour the building and the adjacent gardens. The theatre's opening on June 17, 1910 was truly grand with a symphonic performance and a dramatic fireworks display. Designed by Captain Bernardo José de Mello, the theatre also boasts a lovely garden and massive square, the perfect place for major cultural events.

Then browse the EMCETUR, originally a 19th century jail and now a renovated cultural landmark and handicraft hub blending history with tourism.

On the return drive to the pier, you'll stop by Espigão de Pedras Bridge with magnificent views to Iracema Beach. Take your time simply enjoying the views or take a picture for your cruise album
