Departing from your ship, your motorcoach takes a panoramic route so you can capture the true splendor of one of the most beautiful ports in the Mediterranean. After a brief photo stop, you'll continue to the infamous ancient city walls surrounding the Old Town, part of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Dubrovnik dates back over a thousand years, and was known as the Republic of Ragusa before it was overthrown by Napoleon in 1808. It once rivaled Venice in its importance to world culture. The city walls you see were constructed mainly during the 12th to 17th centuries in order to protect the city-state's freedom, and of course, its safety. They are considered to be amongst the great fortification systems of the Middle Ages, since no hostile army ever breached them during this time period.
Many consider walking the walls an essential Dubrovnik experience. The views during the 1.2-mile walk are unmatched, with breathtaking scenes both inside and outside the walls. You'll start on the walls' northern portion. As you stroll along them with your guide, you can see the sparkling blue waters along the seashore and the historic 15th-century buildings in Old Town. After walking for 30 minutes, you'll stop at the Maritime Museum, located in St. John's Fortress in the ramparts' southeast corner. The museum is full of artifacts like scale models of famous ships, surprisingly accurate ancient maps, knives, dueling pistols, antique coins, and treasures of Dubrovnik's nautical past.
After your museum visit and some refreshments, you'll continue your guided walk along the southern portion of the walls for another half hour. By now, you'll be ready to start exploring or shopping on your own. You'll have an hour of free time to do as you wish to complete your memorable day before returning to your motorcoach and your ship.
