This full-day tour of the lovely city of Hue (pronounced 'hway') begins when you board your motorcoach at the port of Chan May and enjoy a scenic 90-minute ride to the former imperial capital of Vietnam, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Your first stop is one of the most notable historical places in the city, the Citadel, where the imperial family lived from the early 1800s until the mid-1900s. Surrounded by a moat and walls that are two kilometers long on each side, the imperial city within contains yet another, inner, walled fortress called the 'Forbidden City', where only the Vietnamese emperor's family was allowed. Spend some time strolling through the Citadel's structures, which are undergoing an extensive restoration that is scheduled to be completed in 2015.
Hop back aboard your motorcoach for the short ride to your next stop, the Thien Mu Pagoda. Pass through the impressive entrance gate, defended by two fearsome wooden guardians, complete with real facial hair! The first structure you see is a striking seven-story octagonal tower, built in 1601. Behind it is a complex of buildings that still functions as a Buddhist monastery, where monks may be seen going about their daily routines.
After exploring the pagoda, you will be ready to sit down for a delicious buffet lunch at a nearby hotel restaurant, featuring the local cuisine.
Refueled and refreshed, re-board your motorcoach for the short drive to Tu Duc Tomb, located on the outskirts of Hue. Tu Duc was the longest-reigning emperor of the Nguyen dynasty, and his tomb is the largest and most luxurious of the numerous royal tombs in this area. Nestled in a beautiful pine forest, this magnificent complex, which includes a sprawling mansion and manicured grounds, served as the Emperor's palatial retreat well before his death. He spent much of his time here towards the end of his troubled reign, hunting, writing poetry, and enjoying the company of his many wives and concubines.
Finally, end your day with a stop at 'Hat Craft Village', where you can watch local artisans hand craft traditional conical hats out of leaves. You will even have an opportunity to take home a hat of your own! From here, you will board your motorcoach for the relaxing ride back to port.
