Get off the beaten path and explore the environs of Crete on a delightful six-hour tour that explores the fascinating island of Spinalonga and winds its way through the narrow streets of the charming town of Elounda.
Your day begins when you board a comfortable motorcoach and set off on a scenic, one-hour drive along dramatic coastal roads to Elounda, a lively seaside resort. From here, it's a short 20-minute boat ride over the azure sea to the island of Spinalonga, which means "long thorn" in Italian. Spinalonga was once occupied by the Venetians for 150 years, and remnants of their civilization from the 16th century are still seen in the island's castle and fortifications. In the early 20th century, it was made into a leper colony.
Upon landing on the shores, you'll be led through a mysterious tunnel called Dante's Gate, named for Dante's book Inferno and its entrance to Hell. When lepers arrived in Spinalonga, they had no idea what was in store for them, and much fear and trepidation was felt. You'll be able to place yourself in their shoes as you walk through the stone halls. This small island was the perfect place to isolate those suffering from leprosy, believed, erroneously, to be highly contagious. Patients on the island received food and basic medical care and could feel safe among the others afflicted. Today Spinalonga is an abandoned village with a smattering of shops and a small church. It has a haunting beauty that stirs emotions in all who visit the island.
After your tour, sail back across Mirabello Bay into the fishing harbor of Elounda and enjoy free time to explore this elegant resort town on your own. Wander through the pedestrian lanes, lined with boutiques and memento shops. If you'd prefer to relax on the sand, head over to the popular blue flag beach or just sit and people watch and treat yourself to a glass of ouzo and meze bites.
At the designated time, return to the motorcoach and settle in for the drive back to port.
