Explore the intriguing island of Spinalonga and meander through the streets of the pretty town of Agios Nikolaos, considered to be one of the most beautiful in Crete.

Discover the dramatic coastal vistas that Crete offers in abundance during a scenic drive to the bustling seaside resort of Elounda.

Then it's a short island hop by boat to the intriguing island of Spinalonga, an abandoned village with a few shops, a little church and small homes. Originally, Spinalonga was part of the island of Crete, but when it was occupied by the Venetians, they carved out the coast for defense purposes and built a towering fort. Its haunting past is revealed when you learn more about the leper colony that lived here during the early 1900s within the Venetian fortress walls. Step off the boat and enter the island through Dante's Gate, so named because the lepers who arrived did not know what was going to happen to them upon entry. Follow your guide on a walking tour through the quiet streets of this uninhabited town and learn more about how the island was leper colony until 1957. Today, the island is experiencing a renaissance, with a new generation of visitors coming to explore its emotional place in Greece's history.

Return to the seaside village of Elounda with its sunny beaches, views of the Mirabello gulf and resort ambiance. This former fishing village is now one of Crete's most exclusive resorts. Lunch is served in a local restaurant. Savor traditional fare, hot and cold appetizers and items fresh off the grill accompanied by wine and take in the views of the mighty fortress of the island of Spinalonga.

Refreshed, drive along the north shores of the island to the beautiful town of Agios Nikolaos. Pronounced ah-yee-os nih-ko-laos. Here, you're free to explore independently. Stroll along the harbor front, admire the stylish architecture, pop into fashionable boutiques and grab a snack from the fresh markets and tavernas. There is a small, well-curated folk museum and a lovely stretch of beach. The showpiece of the city is the small lake, known as Voulismeni, in the center of the city that mythology says served as the bathing waters of the goddess Athena.

Return to the motorcoach at the designated time and chat with your fellow travelers on your return to Heraklion and your waiting ship.
