A long-lost kingdom awaits your discovery when you travel to Knossos, high in the hills of southern Heraklion. Once believed to exist only in Greek myths, the ruins of Knossos were revealed in a 1901 excavation by British archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans that brought to light the splendors of Crete's Bronze Age.
Board your comfortable motorcoach and journey along the island's rugged north coast to Knossos, where you'll visit a remarkable complex of rooms that was once the heart of Minoan society and the political, social and spiritual center of their culture.
Knossos flourished from 1900 to 1600 B.C. The ruins of its palace were discovered by a local merchant in 1878 and excavated in 1901. Knossos once supported over 8,000 inhabitants, and its palace boasts more than 1,200 rooms. Follow your knowledgeable guide through the excavation site and learn more about the history of this hub of Crete's Minoan culture, through several restored rooms and buildings. Stroll through the royal quarters, central court and storerooms and learn the tale of the mythical Minotaur said to have been held captive by King Minos within a labyrinth in the palace. There is much artwork to admire, including such works of art as the "Bull-leaping Fresco" and the "Toreador Fresco," painted circa 1500-1400 B.C.
At the completion of your tour, reboard the motorcoach and relax on the pleasant ride back to Heraklion, where you'll be dropped off at the centrally located Eleftherias Square. Still enclosed by the Venetian wall, Heraklion is a wonderful city to discover on your own. Pedestrian streets are lined with charming shops, and there are tempting fruit markets and relaxing tavernas, the perfect place to sit and people watch while enjoying a coffee or a glass of ouzo. Important city icons include the Koules Venetian Fortress and the Church of St. Titos. You might choose to visit the Heraklion Archaeological Museum with its exceptional collection of artifacts from excavations around the island or the stately Venetian Castle located at the harbor.
You will have 2.5 hours to spend as you please. At the designated time, return to the motorcoach and chat with your fellow travelers about all you've seen as you head back to port.
