What you will visit:
Monastery of Arkadi
The austere stone façade of the Arkadi Monastery stands in contrast to the turbulent history this remarkable building has witnessed. During the 1866 rebellion, 300 Cretan rebels and some 700 women and children took refuge behind the sanctuary walls. The Turks broke through, and the gunpowder stores were lit despite the presence of innocents. Hundreds died in the explosion, and the loss cemented support for the uprising throughout the region. The façade survived, and the remaining buildings tell a fascinating story of the monastery's troubled past. So important is the monastery to Greek history and culture that, prior to the use of the euro, it was the image depicted on the 100-drachma note.
Rethymnon Town
Building of this exquisite town began in 1204 after the Venetian conquest of Crete, and today Rethymnon is considered one of the best-preserved towns of the Renaissance, boasting excellent examples of both Venetian and Turkish architecture. The main streets run parallel to the coast, leaving the city open to the glory of the sea, a picturesque lighthouse at its crown. A wander through the narrow alleyways takes you on a tour through history, past museums, mosques and fountains built during Crete's storied past.

What you will see along the way:
Your approximately one-hour drive from Chania takes you through breathtaking scenery and friendly villages then up a windy, steep road to the Arkadi Monastery, 500 meters (1,640 feet) above sea level. Situated on a verdant plateau, it is surrounded by olive groves, oak, pine and cypress trees and fragrant vineyards.
Shopping:
During your free time in Rethymnon, explore the numerous shops offering trendy fashions, handmade jewelry and souvenirs such as olive oil, dried herbs, colorful embroidery and pottery.
Snack:
Traditional and modern restaurants can be found in Rethymnon, where the local cuisine centers on fresh produce, seafood, the famous "ntakos" salad, smoked meats and filo (or phyllo) dough pastries. Ice cream shops scoop sweet refreshments, and the tavernas serve wonderful Greek coffee to sip while you people-watch.
