WHAT YOU VISIT
Hike, Swim & Lunch for Families:
Set against the soaring White Mountains, the 11-kilometer (eight-mile) long Imbros Gorge canyon is renowned for its striking rock formations and diverse flora and fauna. From the pier, you'll travel south into the heart of the island to the village of Chora Sfakion. From here, you'll follow your guide through the limestone gorge past towering cliffs and narrow passages, some only two meters (six feet) wide. While not steep or difficult, the gentle path can be rocky but with plenty of pine trees and panoramic views. The hike ends in Komitades. A short drive will take you to Sfakia village where you can opt for a refreshing swim followed by a traditional lunch in a charming taverna.

PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES
Be prepared to take awe-inspiring photos left and right as you walk along the gorge. Aromatic plants like marjoram, sage and thyme cling to the rock cliffs while ancient cypress trees line the trail. Hawks, crows and eagles fly overhead while goats or a Cretan wildcat may make an appearance.

LUNCH
Relax and refresh with lunch at a taverna in Sfakia village. On the menu is tzatziki, dakos (salad) with tomato and white cheese, pastry filled with cheese and vegetables, roast chicken with potatoes, fruit in season, yogurt with honey served with a glass of wine, beer or soft drink.

WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
As you make your way along the path, it's interesting to note that Imbros Gorge is not just a natural wonder but also a site of historical significance. During World War II, it served as an escape route for Allied soldiers heading to the southern coast of Crete. Remnants of this past, like old stone shelters and pathways, add an element of historical intrigue to the hike.
