The rugged beauty of Corsica reveals itself during this half-day journey to the island's interior. Step aboard your air-conditioned motorcoach at the pier and set out through the lovely Mediterranean landscape.
Your scenic drive will begin by traveling north on the main road from Ajaccio towards Bastia. You will quickly find yourself surrounded by macchia, a mixture of evergreen herbs comprised of rock rose, Corsican mint, and myrtle. So fragrant is this chaparral that Napoleon is said to have been able to recognize "his" island with his nose.
As you make your way deep into the island's interior, you cannot miss Monte d'Oro in the distance. One of six major mountains on Corsica, it stands out because it lies roughly in the center of the island so that it commands views in all directions.
At this point, macchia begins to give way to pine forests and you are heading up the mountain on a twisting road. You'll encounter the traditional, old-world village of Bocognano, featuring massive granite houses nestled in the mountainside amid groves of majestic chestnut trees. Arriving at your destination, the Vizzavona Forest, a stunning mountainous preserve. Corsica derives its name from the Phoenician word for "covered forest" and the island's Vizzavona Forest, featuring lush 800-year-old pine trees.
It's time to pull out your camera as you take in the views from the Vizzavona Pass, which lies 3,300 feet above sea level. Time and weather permitting, you may even enjoy a little stroll on your own along verdant hiking trails through the dappled sunlight of the forest that gives way to views of breathtaking mountain peaks. As you do, you can imagine a time when Victorian visitors once made their way to this spot on mules, in order to enjoy the very scenery that envelops you!
What could possibly make this interior island visit more perfect? Well, a "spuntinu," of course! This hearty Corsican snack consists of the island's excellent cheeses, charcuterie (cured meats) and tasty wines. It's a divine way to cap off your adventure prior to re-boarding your motorcoach for a scenic drive back same route to Ajaccio and your ship.
