WHAT YOU VISIT
Tarquinia
Dating back to 9th century BC Etruscans, the city stands 436 feet atop a hill overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea surrounded by a medieval wall and turrets. Upon arrival, you'll board the Trolley Train where a friendly and informative guide will share his knowledge of the city as it meanders its way through the narrow, cobblestone streets lined with imposing buildings from the Middle Ages. Sit back and relax as you ride past the 13th century St. Francesco Church, famed as the site where St. Francis performed a miracle by saving the lives of children. Further on, you'll see the 14th century Town Hall Lodge, once the home of government and military offices. Additional highlights include the Cathedral of Santa Margherita; built in 1260, it was destroyed by fire in 1643 and reconstructed by the end of the 19th century. Further on sits the Palazzo dei Priori; built between 1293 and 1443, it consists of a number of buildings and is currently the headquarters of the Tarquiniense Society of Art and History.
