The medina of Tetouan and its enticing network of shaded alleyways is made for exploring with a knowledgeable guide. Within this timeless UNESCO World Heritage Site, you'll touch the heart of two cultures (Spanish and Arab) at the crossroads of two continents (Europe and Africa).

Your full-day adventure begins in the enchanting port city of Ceuta. Located on a slim isthmus where the Atlantic and Mediterranean meet, the stunning harbor with its tranquil waters and imposing mountains offers a preview of the dramatic scenery that lies ahead. Meet your experienced, English-speaking guide, board a comfortable air-conditioned motorcoach and set off on a panoramic drive to the historic capital of northern Morocco. Along the way, your guide will regale you with intriguing insight into this extraordinary part of the world. Settlements dating to the 3rd century B.C. and echoes of the Roman and Phoenician eras colored the region's early days. The current town was built in the 15th century by refugees of the Spanish 'reconquista.' This 700-year-long struggle for dominion over Spain pitched Christian against Muslim; made martyred St. James the Apostle the patron saint of Spain, elevated El Cid to the status of Spanish national hero, and thrust the Moors out of their beloved Granada.

Approaching Tetouan, a Berber name that means 'open your eyes,' you'll be struck by the city's dazzling setting. Draped across the slopes of a narrow valley, backed by the majestic Rif Mountains, Morocco's 'white dove' lies resplendent in the sun. Gaze at the tidy white washed houses with wooden doors bearing Granada's pomegranate symbol, travel cobbled streets laced with white-brick arches and tinkling fountains, and enter the historic walled medina through one of its seven original gates. Here, a warren of shaded alleyways leads to intricate hand-tiled mosques, intriguing museums, Hassan II Square and the Khalifa, the palace of the royal family.

And all around you the Medina bustles with the colorful wares for which the artisans of Tetouan are justly revered. Along commercial streets like Tarrafin, Trankat and Mtamar, built over the old mazmorras (underground tunnels) where Portuguese hostages were imprisoned during the 16th and 17th centuries, you'll find a variety of products on sale. As you explore, discover the handprint of Moorish architecture in the city's 'funduqs' (hostelries for medieval travelers and traders); 'zawayas' (small dedicated prayer areas); and fountained squares, enjoying a delicious lunch of traditional delicacies in a charming local restaurant.

Then complete your strenuous, full-day tour with the return drive through lush fruit orchards, re-crossing the Moroccan border and arriving back at the pier in the neighboring enclave of Ceuta.
