Enjoy a scenic drive from the stunning coastal city of Spanish Ceuta to the inland region of the legendary Rif Mountain range. Arriving in Chefchaouen, you'll be transported into a fairy-tale land of Arabian splendor. Nearly everything is painted blue in this stunning Moroccan hamlet, hence the name 'The Blue City.' Watch in wonder as delightful scenes brimming with human interest and visual beauty appear around every twist and turn of the city's cobbled lanes.
Disembark your motorcoach and set off on foot with your knowledgeable guide to explore a thrilling labyrinth of sky-blue houses, streets and romantic archways. So many photo opportunities vie for your attention from brilliantly tiled mosques to the trickling sound of water seeping between old rocks. Founded in 1471, the town is considered holy, and began to prosper with the arrival of Muslim refugees who came here to escape the Reconquista of Spain. It was this conflict that made El Cid a Spanish hero and drove the Moors from their beloved city of Granada.
Spanish, Berber, Arab and Jewish neighborhoods thrive side by side in the four main quarters. A twisting street leads uphill to Uta el Hammam Square, the large plaza at the heart of the Medina. As in every Moroccan town, the Medina is centrally located and can only be accessed through gates. Bazaars brimming with precious handicrafts of leather, silk, wool and wood are the pillars of the town´s economy and the stuff of which great souvenir shopping is made.
Enjoy every minute of the time allowed for exploring and browsing. You'll be right in the midst of the action as you join in the fun of bargaining for Moroccan handicrafts from colorful robes, hats and slippers to cookware and more (a Moroccan tajine [a special earthenware pot] would be the perfect addition to your kitchen). And you can focus your camera on views of the ancient walls of the Alcazaba and the crenelated red towers of the exotic Kasbah.
Soon you'll find yourself relaxing in a charming restaurant where you will enjoy a traditional Moroccan menu, as folkloric musicians perform for your enjoyment, you'll become thoroughly immersed in what is truly a vibrant way of life.
You will re-board your motorcoach and enjoy the return trip through the hills and plains of Morocco to Spanish Ceuta and your waiting ship.
