The Andalusian, also known as the pure bred Spanish horse, is one of the country's most iconic symbols. According to ancient Greek myth, this intelligent, powerful horse was bred by Zephyr, the god of the west wind and was a reigning figure in Olympus. Recognized as an individual breed since the 15th century, the horse was prized by nobility and earned the nickname 'Horse of Kings.' Learn the history and mystery surrounding these noble creatures during a four-hour excursion that begins with a fun visit to a nearby horse ranch and ends with a leisurely tour around Cartagena.
After you board your coach it's a short drive to the 'rancho de caballos', belonging to the Conesa Family, nestled in the countryside just minutes from the port. When you arrive a member of the family will greet you as you disembark and lead you to the training area and meadows here you'll see an exciting demonstration of Spanish horsemanship. The horses you'll see are the descendants of the Andalusians bred by Romans over 2,000 years ago.
The Conesa Family has dedicated more than 40 years to the ranch and training of world class equine athletes. They will open their doors to show a typical day on the ranch; during the tour they teach us their daily work of breeding, care and training of purebred Spanish horses, the horse techniques in which they are experts.
Andalusian horses are known for their grace, speed, strength, beauty, and 'dancing.' During the sevillanas performance you'll marvel at the complex choreography as the stallion and its expert riders demonstrate the art of dressage, a manner of training that instills obedience, flexibility, and balance in the horse.
Strongly built, and compact yet elegant, Andalusians have long, thick manes and tails. Their most common coat color is gray, although they can be found in many other colors, including buckskin, chestnut and palomino.
As you watch these mighty steeds, it may be hard to imagine that the Andalusian nearly became extinct due to cross breeding and because of its rarity the Spanish government placed an embargo on their export until the 1960s. Today, the breed has spread throughout the globe with more than 185,000 registered Andalusians worldwide.
After the performance enjoy a delicious and typical Spanish snack of olive oil, bread, and a tapas accompanied by a glass of wine.
Then, you'll rejoin your coach and drive back to your ship. En route, enjoy a panoramic tour of the city.
