What you will visit:
Elche
This ancient city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its vast palm tree groves: a world wonder that began with the Carthaginians, continued with the Romans, and expanded under the Moors.
Huerto del Cura National Historic Garden
Discover the charms of a palm orchard at Huerto del Cura National Historic Garden. Here the candelabra-shaped Imperial Palm Tree inspires with beauty and grace. As you delve ever deeper into the verdant beauty of this tropical sanctuary, you'll feel rejuvenated and refreshed. It's an experience no nature lover should miss. Ever since Iberian times, Elche was an important center of civilization. The "Lady of Elche," which now resides in the National Archaeological Museum in Madrid, harks back to the 4th century and reveals a glimpse of what some believe to be a Carthaginian goddess. Elche is now the third most important city in Valencia thanks to its prosperous shoe and clothing manufacturers and, of course, its history and cultural significance.
Optional Visits:
Guests have the option of touring the Arab Baths and the Alcazar (for a small admission fee).
Additionally, guests may choose to view the Basilica of St. Mary, dating from the 1600s, the only temple in the Catholic world that is permitted to hold a religious theatrical drama within its doors. The famous play from the 13th century, the "Elche Mystery Play," is performed here in honor of the Assumption of Mary. The Municipal De La Festa Museum allows visitors to glimpse aspects of the festival through visual exhibits featuring many of the play's ritual objects. Also, there is a dynamic display designed to capture imagery and sensations that evoke an emotional response.
What you will see along the way:
A panoramic drive through the city will tantalize your senses. Exotic, exuberant and filled with splendid, intricately carved stonework buildings and a fair share of statues and monuments, your drive is enhanced by expert commentary that provides local insight. Along the River Vinalopo you'll see the basilica and the palacio. On the return to port, enjoy a scenic route through the lush countryside.
