A Walk Through The Roman Forum District
Strenuous Activity
Be sure to read the Special Notes further down this page for important requirements and restriction.
Designed to stimulate curiosity and inspire learning, this four-hour adventure is part educational, part adventure and 100% fun. Princess Cruises has teamed up with the Discovery Channel to bring you this unique and exclusive adventure - a visit to the District of the Roman Forum, an open-air archaeological site that dates back to the 1st century. A Roman colony in 54 B.C. known as Cathago Nova, this archaeological treasure trove laid buried beneath the modern city of Cartagena for 20 centuries until its discovery in the 1980s.
Cartagena was awarded a national prize for its restoration and conservation of this historical site and this four-hour excursion offers an exclusive first-hand look at the painstaking arduous work performed by archaeologists, conservationists and restorers.
To thoroughly enjoy your adventure be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes and being along your camera to capture each memorable sight. From the pier it's just a short ride to beneath Molinete Hill, known in antiquity as arx Hasdrubalis, now home of the Parque Archeológico del Cerro del Molinete, and the District of the Roman Forum.
After you arrive you'll follow your knowledgeable guide for a walk along the multi-terraced area you can witness the exciting and exacting work that takes place in the Roman Forum. You'll see the thermal bath complex, including a colonnaded courtyard and the atrium building once used for religious banquets. Marvel at the intact walls that stand over 13 feet tall adorned with their original 2,000-year-old murals.
At the conclusion of your tour you'll have time to yourself to take photos, stroll the ancient paths and imagine how the newly conquered Carthaginians felt about Rome's urban renewal plans.
As we finish visiting the Roman Forum, there is a complete (walking) orientation tour around the city centre of Cartagena, (instead of a panoramic drive) highlighting the most important buildings of the city, strolling through the Main Street to see the Modernist Buildings, Plaza del Rey, for the Military Arsenal, and surroundings such as the beautiful San Francisco Square.
