Your tour begins as you board your transportation for a scenic drive to the Old City, passing old colonial buildings and houses with colorful balconies en route.
A brief stop at Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas (Fort of San Felipe) allows for a myriad of photo opportunities. Upon arriving at the magnificent fortress, you'll quickly see why Cartagena was the most impenetrable city of the Spanish Main. This 17th-century construction is the largest Spanish fort in the New World, representing the most important work of Spanish military engineering in South America.
Your next stop is the Parque de la Marina, entrance to the Old City. From there, you start your walking in the famed Old City, via Plaza de Santa Teresa. Your guide will offer narration as you pass the San Pedro Claver Church dedicated to the missionary Saint Peter Claver, the patron saint of slaves and the first saint canonized in the Western Hemisphere. Together with your guide, you'll make your way to Plaza Bolívar and make a stop at the Modern Art Museum.
You'll marvel at the well-tended Spanish Colonial buildings and age-old Las Muralas (walls of the city), as well as the old church domes, the clock tower, symbol of the city and the city ocean views. Many local bars and restaurants in the old walled town's compact historic core, a UNESCO World Heritage site, remains its shining centerpiece.
Your next stop will be, Las Bóvedas, once dungeons, now home to boutiques and tourist shops. Shopping for handicrafts and works of art by local artisans is on the itinerary. After this quick shopping spree, your tour concludes with a walk back to your transportation, and a relaxing drive back to the pier.
