What you will visit:
Gudhjem
Gudhjem, or 'God's home,' is a quaint fishing village with only 780 permanent residents. Its hilltop vantage point overlooking the northeastern side of the island affords beautiful views of its harbor and bountiful waters that have sustained the village. Fishing and whaling were once the main source of income; today it is the smoking and export of herring, the signature delicacy of Bornholm. The island's signature dish, rye bread layered with smoked herring, raw egg yolk, radishes and chives is called 'Sun over Gudhjem.'

Baltic Sea Glass
For generations, the special light in Bornholm has inspired countless artists, and many arts and crafts have bloomed throughout the region. Bornholm is well known as a center for glass blowing, with several glass-blowing studios on the island, creating artwork and desirable objects. A visit with the artisans is a chance to see and purchase their works and to hear about their inspiration.

What you will see along the way:
Noted for its golden sunshine and ever-shifting light, Bornholm is a haven for artists and nature lovers drawn to its varied landscapes and geography. Drive through the island and gaze upon craggy coastlines, soaring cliffs and white beaches, as well as pastoral landscapes of rolling hills dotted by farms. Rounding out the views is the Almindingen Forest area. Planted in the 1800s to compensate for the extensive logging at the time, today it is one of the largest forests in Denmark.

Photo Opportunity:
Round Church
Bornholm proudly showcases four of Denmark's seven medieval round churches. Built in the 12th and 13th centuries, they were used as places of worship as well as protective fortresses, with upper stories designed to double as shooting galleries against enemy attack and even as storage for passing ships. The striking whitewashed buildings, with their thick walls and curved shape, originally had flat roofs to provided stronger fortification against invading pirates. The freestanding bell towers seen today were added several centuries after the original construction.
Hammershus Castle Ruins
Originally built in 1200 by the archbishop of Lund, the ruins of the castle stand on a 242-foot (74-meter) rocky plateau in the northwest corner of Bornholm. Completely abandoned in 1743, the ruins are the largest of their kind in northern Europe.
