What you will visit:
Hammershus Castle Ruins
The ruins of the castle, which was originally built in 1200 by the archbishop of Lund, stand on a 242-foot (74-meter) rocky plateau in the northwest corner of Bornholm. Completely abandoned in 1743, the ruins are the largest of their kind in northern Europe.

Bornholm's Medieval Center/Outdoor Museum
The impressive Medieval Center is an open-air museum and a replica of a typical medieval town. Craftspeople at work, volunteer costumed townspeople, and an array of historically accurate streets and buildings take you back in time as you roam the enclave and experience society in medieval times. See reproductions of a forge, a watermill, tiny cottages, and a fortress--parts of daily life from about 1350-1450.

Osterlars Round Church
Bornholm proudly showcases four of Denmark's seven medieval round churches, with Østerlars being the oldest and largest, built in year 1150 AD. The round churches were used as places of worship as well as protective fortresses, with upper stories designed to double as shooting galleries against enemy attack and even as storage for survival supplies. The striking whitewashed buildings, with their thick walls and curved shape, originally had flat roofs to provided stronger fortification against invading pirates. The freestanding bell towers seen today were added several centuries after the original construction.

What you will see along the way:
Bornholm is a haven for artists and nature lovers drawn to its varied landscapes. A scenic drive along the coast passes the city of Gudhjem, or 'God's home.' This quaint fishing village with only 780 permanent residents commands its hilltop vantage point overlooking the northeastern side of the island, affording beautiful views of its harbor and bountiful waters that have sustained the village.
