What you will visit:
Gudhjem
Gudhjem, or 'God's home,' is a quaint fishing village with only 780 permanent residents. Its hilltop vantage point overlooking the northeastern side of the island affords beautiful views of its harbor and bountiful waters that have sustained the village. Fishing and whaling were once the main source of income; today it is the smoking and export of herring, the signature delicacy of Bornholm. The island's signature dish, rye bread layered with smoked herring, raw egg yolk, radishes and chives is called 'Sun over Gudhjem.'
Svaneke
Tiny Svaneke (small swan), is nestled on the eastern coastline of Bornholm. Rows of charming half-timbered houses line narrow streets that lead to the harbor. It was awarded the distinction as one of Denmark's most beautiful towns (2013), and its heritage center is the perfect place to stroll, sample confectionaries from the sweet shops and visit the arts and crafts galleries showcasing blown glass and ceramics made by local artisans. The town's brewery produces organic craft beer utilizing sustainable production methods.
What you will see along the way:
Noted for its golden sunshine and ever-shifting light, Bornholm is a haven for artists and nature lovers drawn to its varied landscapes and geography. Drive through the island and gaze upon craggy coastlines, soaring cliffs and white beaches, as well as pastoral landscapes of rolling hills dotted by farms. Rounding out the views is the Almindingen Forest area. Planted in the 1800s to compensate for the extensive logging at the time, today it is one of the largest forests in Denmark.t
