Mt. Takasaki Monkey Park & Boiling Hell Hot Springs
Strenuous Activity
Be sure to read the Special Notes further down this page for important requirements and restriction.
This half-day excursion begins with some monkey business! Board your comfortable motorcoach and enjoy a scenic drive to Mt. Takasaki Monkey Park. Mt. Takasaki is a forested mountain just outside of Beppu and home to over 1,500 wild Japanese monkeys. Within this natural habitat, the monkeys have been fed regularly in order to keep them living on the mountain and prevent conflicts with local fruit farmers. Visitors can either walk or take a monorail up to the observation area. The monkeys are quite accustomed to human visitors, and it is possible to get very close in order to take their pictures!
From here, you will return to Beppu to experience two of the town's celebrated hot springs, the Jigoku Meguri - or "Boiling Hells." There are eight of these devilish hot springs, each with unique colors, minerals and steam. Intended for viewing rather than bathing, the springs were given their name because it was said that these mysterious, steamy attractions resembled a scene from hell.
First, the Chinoike (Blood) Jigoku will thrill you with its fiery red crimson color, derived from the red clay particles that swirl through the waters. Chinoike is the most photogenic of the eight "hells," so be sure to have your camera at the ready. Then, marvel at the enchanting Umi (Sea) Jigoku, with its waters as beautiful as an aquamarine tropical sea. This "sea hell" features a pond of steaming blue water and includes a delightfully invigorating foot spa where you may soak your feet. Before departing this outer-worldly area, you may purchase snacks from the vendors or find a memento of the experience in the souvenir shop.
At the completion of your tour, a relaxing motorcoach ride will return you to port.
