A half-day excursion in Beppu affords the opportunity to see the largest hot-water "gusher" in Japan while exploring three of nine hot springs that are popularly referred to as "Boiling Hell." Board your motorcoach and travel to Jigoku Meguri to visit these celebrated springs, each with very distinct mineral properties, colors and functions. The Jigoku are intended for viewing rather than bathing, and the springs earned their name because these mysterious, steamy attractions resemble a scene from hell ("jigoku" means "hell"). Begin with the Umi (Sea) Jigoku, a beautiful cobalt blue shade that has a little foot spa. Then, view the dramatic Chinoike (Blood) Jigoku, considered the most photogenic of the springs, followed by the Tatsumaki (Tornado) Jigoku, which really lives up to its name. Its geyser spurts every 20 minutes!
