WHAT YOU VISIT
Olio Monte Refinery
Discover the secrets to "liquid gold" and learn how the humble olive has been used in Montenegrin recipes for centuries with a visit to the Olio Monte refinery near the village of Mikulici. Covering an area of 12,000-square-meters (129,166-square-feet), the refinery produces nearly 1,000 liters (264 gallons) of virgin and extra-virgin olive oil every year. As you stroll the beautiful olive grove, you'll learn the harvesting techniques followed by a sampling of the extra virgin olive oil produced from the "barska žutica" variety also known as the "queen of olives" for its balance of fruity and zesty flavors.
Stari Bar
Founded in the 5th century BC, it's one of the oldest settlements on the Adriatic coast. Conquered by the Venetians, the Serbians, the Hungarians and the Ottoman Empire, Stari Bar is the largest and the most important medieval archaeological site in the Balkans. Covering almost five hectares (over 12 acres), it was abandoned in the late 19th century and partially destroyed by a major earthquake. Once you arrive at this impressive time capsule, you'll walk through one of the important single structures in Old Town-the main gate, which dates back to the 14th century. Here, you'll find two very well preserved churches: the 14th century Church of St. Katarina and the 15th century Church of St. Veneranda. Nearby sits the landmark 15th century fortress with its imposing towers and defensive walls and the 17th century Turkish bath and mosque.
