Named by readers of Travel & Leisure magazine as the "Best Island" in the world, Bali conjures up images of mystical beauty and spiritual beliefs. This comprehensive and fascinating nine-hour excursion will take you to some of the island's most dazzling landmarks. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes, a hat, light clothing and don't forget your camera to record every memorable moment.
After a traditional Balinese pendet welcome dance, you'll board your motorcoach and travel to Tohpati near the capital city of Denpasar. Along the way you'll see beautiful landscapes of coastal plains, lush terraced hillsides, rice paddies, and fruit and spice plantations.
The roots of batik date back 2,000 years but it was the Balinese who turned it into an art form. And Tohpati is considered the center of Balinese hand weaving and handmade batik prints. The village's factories are not only the largest manufacturers of this highly developed art form but retailers as well. Once you arrive in Tohpati, you'll visit a factory to see firsthand the entire batik process. Did you know that the word batik means "to dot"? During your visit you'll watch how the fabric is dyed, the pattern is outlined with charcoal or graphite and then you can see how wax is applied, tracing the outline. The final step is dyeing the fabric again. After observing the batik process, you're invited to browse for souvenirs, gifts and fine Balinese crafts.
To witness another time-honored tradition, reboard your coach and travel to Penglipuran Culture Village. Once you disembark you'll be charmed by the beautifully landscaped houses sitting neatly in a row. The village people live under strict rules just like their ancestors centuries ago. And their architecture is a reflection of this tradition: the front side of the house faces Mt. Agung, home of the gods and each house has its own temple.
Continuing on, Kehen Temple, considered the most beautiful Hindu temple on the island. Built in the 13th century, the temple offers an authentic Balinese temple atmosphere. Three courtyards are connected by a series of steps that leads to the superbly carved entrance. Don't be alarmed by the demonic face of Kala Makara – this Hindu guardian stands watch over the temple grounds.
Next, is a delicious buffet lunch featuring Indonesian dishes in the village of Subak Guliang. As you enjoy your meal, marvel at the breathtaking views of the rice paddies and Mt. Agung. Following lunch, you'll journey to the village of Klungkung for a photo stop at Kertha Gosa. A Sanskrit word meaning "peaceful announcement," Kertha Gosa was built in 1710 as the town's Hall of Justice. This impressive open-air pavilion features a ceiling covered in terrifying paintings depicting good vs. evil. Nearby is the lovely floating pavilion called Bale Kambang. If you look closely you can see ancient statues perched on the veranda.
Finally, you'll travel to your ship with photos and memories to share with everyone back home.
