WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
Walking Tour of Furnas Lake & Hot Springs
The rugged beauty of Mother Nature is on display at Furnas Valley, an otherworldly landscape of hot springs, fumaroles, bubbling mud springs and geysers. A scenic drive along the island's south coast leads to this geological phenomena, one of the richest hydrological areas in Europe with 22 thermal springs. Walking on easy unpaved roads and trails, you'll pass through dense and lush vegetation and arrive at beautiful viewpoints. The scent of sulphur mingles with the perfume of flowers, and the cold, transparent waters of the streams mix with the boiling water, made golden by the iron in the water. Finally, you'll reach Furnas Hot Springs, an area of bubbling, mineral-rich geothermal pools.
PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES
The land surrounding Furnas Lake is dominated by the great slopes of the volcanic crater where fields are edged with Japanese red cedars, hydrangeas and the kahiki ginger.
WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
