Experience São Miguel's botanical and geothermal wonders during this active, half-day excursion that begins at your pier. Board your motorcoach, and, along with your friendly and knowledgeable guide, set off on a scenic island drive.
En route, view the island's oldest town, the picturesque Ribeira Grande located on a volcanic plateau above the sea. The narrow, cobbled lanes of this lovely colonial village feature Portuguese-influenced architecture dating from the 16th century.
Visit Terra Nostra Botanical Gardens located just outside of the town of Furnas. Stroll along the grounds of this breathtaking garden which features lovely trails circling beautifully groomed lakes and streams, plantations of hydrangea and camellia, extensive grottoes, and century-old trees.
Your journey takes you to Furnas Valley, a geothermal wonderland of 22 hot springs, mud pools and geysers which emit steam heavy with the smell of sulphur. See caldeiras venting throughout the area and mineral waters flowing from spigots scattered across the volcanic landscape, each with a different taste. Learn how locals use these steaming pools to cook local stew called "cozido" and in boiling corn and chestnuts.
Drive north past Santa Iria Belvedere featuring stunning views of the island's north coast and past the Gorreana tea plantation, a family-owned business that has been operating since 1883.
Have your camera at the ready as you arrive at the summit of Pico do Ferro Belvedere which offers spectacular panoramic views of the volcanic Furnas Valley.
Your scenic drive back to Ponta Delgada will take you past the village-port of Vila Franca do Campo. Originally settled in 1472, this village was the first capital of São Miguel and is currently one of the principal tourist centers of the Azorean Archipelago.
