Your tour begins in Salerno with a 90 minutes minibus ride to Positano, a picturesque town built into a sheer cliff. The tiers of whitewashed houses that cling to the rock face have been the subject of myriad postcards and photos. Once a major trading port in the Middle Ages, today it is a sophisticated retreat for tourism, filled with boutiques, beach shops, fine restaurants and cafés. Enjoy a leisurely hour to explore the town or go shopping.
The next leg of your tour continues at the charming village of Sorrento. Sorrento was another town that grew wealthy trading with the eastern Mediterranean, and now enjoys a thriving tourist industry. You'll have an elegant lunch with wine at a five-star property in Sorrento. Approximately one hour of free time follows, browse the shops along Corso Italia, Sorrento's flower-lined main boulevard.
You'll re-board the minibus for a one hour ride to the Pompeii ruins. Here you'll discover the archeological excavations of a lost city buried deep beneath the ash when Mt. Vesuvius violently erupted in 79 A.D. It was a monumental natural disaster that killed thousands and entombed the city under ash. Explore the grounds on this two-hour guided walking tour, as your guide describes the remarkably preserved remains that hint at daily life-how they entertained, decorated and lived.
Pompeii before the eruption was known as a vacation community for high society. It had a forum, amphitheater, gymnasium, shops and an aqueduct that delivered water for irrigation, fountains and private baths. Some of the ruins are remarkably preserved with detailed mosaics and frescoes decorating the interiors of villas.
