Your delightful day begins in Salerno, where you'll board a comfortable motorcoach and travel 1 1/2 hours along the Autostrada and Sorrento's magical coastline. From your window, take in the breathtaking views of the sparkling Bay of Naples and dramatic Mt. Vesuvius, the fiery volcano that buried Pompeii in 79 A.D. Upon arrival in Sorrento, you'll have approximately three hours to explore on your own, making this the perfect choice for independent-minded travelers.
Sunny Sorrento is a picture-perfect Italian town, a favorite destination for visitors and locals alike. Nestled on a terrace overlooking the Amalfi coastline, Sorrento is a jumble of narrow streets lined with colorful villas, citrus and olive groves, and quaint restaurants and shops.
The town's name is derived from the Greek word meaning "flowing," as it appears to flow over rugged limestone cliffs. Legend tells that it is here that the
sirens or mermaids, mythical feminine creatures with celestial voices, called to unsuspecting sailors who fell under the spell of their beguiling beauty.
In addition to spectacular vistas of the bustling colorful marina below, this charming town is known for its rustic simplicity. Stroll along medieval alleyways, peek into artisan workshops and galleries, and purchase some of its famed souvenirs, including lace, ceramics, Intarsia woodwork and of course limoncello, the delicate liqueur produced locally. Horse-drawn carriages can be found in the center of town for a very romantic way to see the sights.
Art history buffs will want to see the Duomo, the city's cathedral, a stately 15th century Romanesque landmark adorned with frescos above the main entrance and intricate marble work inside. There are also several museums, the 18th century Museo Bottega della Tarsia Lignea with a fine collection of local wood pieces and the Museo Correale di Terranova, which showcases a collection of decorative art from the 16th to the 19th century.
When you've worked up an appetite, head to Corso Italia, the flower-filled main street lined with cafes and wood-oven pizza parlors. This portion of your tour is non-guided and does not include meals.
Conclude your day with a refreshing walk along Sorrento's seaside promenade then meet the motorcoach at the designated time and sit back to relax on the ride back to the ship.
