WHAT YOU VISIT
Cathedral of Saint Matthew
Built between 1080 and 1085, Salerno's most important landmark is an architectural treasure with a Romanesque exterior and a 183-foot-tall bell tower overlooking a portico of 28 arched columns. Walk through the enormous bronze doors to a stunning interior filled with arches, columns, sumptuous mosaics, sacred artwork and sculptures ranging from the Middle Ages to Baroque. Steps lead down to a marble crypt that holds the body of St. Matthew, brought here in the 10th century.

PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES
Salerno's historic heart is a time-forgotten tangle of cobbled alleyways and its impressive cathedral is noted for its bronze doors considered masterpieces of medieval craftsmanship.

SNACK
After the visit, you'll walk to a pastry shop for the famous Salerno "Scazzetta del Cardinale," a tasty dessert of sponge cake, filled with Chantilly custard and juicy strawberries.

WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
You'll meet your guide at the pier and set off for a walking tour of Salerno's historic center. Known locally as Centro Storico, the historic heart of the city is characterized by its narrow streets, ancient buildings, and vibrant atmosphere. Marvel at its colorful sights and sounds as you begin your stroll down Via dei Mercanti, an area rich with small shops. On your way back to the ship, you'll walk down the Salerno promenade, which offers magnificent views of the Gulf of Salerno and the Amalfi Coast.

Schedule

Special Notes

The tour runs entirely on foot. Wear comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen and head cover. The tour may operate in reverse order. Headsets (included) will enhance your experience. This is a walking tour and therefore extended walking is included. Some uphill walking is included in order to reach Salerno Cathedral.

No bare shoulders or skirts / shorts are allowed inside the Cathedral. Note that the crypt is closed on Sundays and during Mass (especially on Saturdays and Sundays); in these cases, the guide will provide explanations from outside, and guests may enter individually.
At the end of the tour, guests may also choose to remain in Salerno's city center and return to the ship independently. Guests must be in good physical conditions and not suffer from heart diseases.
