Your tour begins in Salerno where you'll board an air-conditioned motorcoach and travel 1 1/2 hours on the Autostrada and along the Sorrento coast, with magnificent views of the Bay of Naples and Mt. Vesuvius-the still-active volcano that buried Pompeii in 79 A.D.- in the backdrop.

In the morning, enjoy approximately 2 1/2 hours of free time to explore Sorrento before your afternoon in Pompeii. The village affords splendid views of the sea and the colorful marina below. Stroll the flower-filled main street, Corso Italia, lined with quaint boutiques and sidewalk cafés. This portion of your tour is non-guided and does not include lunch or entrance fees. At a designated time, you'll meet your tour group to return to your motorcoach for the one-hour drive to Pompeii.

At the Pompeii ruins, you'll discover the archeological excavations of a lost city buried deep beneath the ash from Mt. Vesuvius. Walk the grounds on this two-hour guided tour of the city. Entering by the sea gate, your walking tour takes in the city's baths, villas, theaters and wrestling grounds. Visit a wine shop where wine bottles still wait for patrons who will never come. Plaster casts mark the positions of the fallen that were swiftly overcome by volcanic ash.

Your knowledgeable guide will point out the remarkably preserved remains that hint at daily Roman life-their customs, cuisine and how they entertained, decorated and lived. Highlights include stunning frescoes and elaborately detailed mosaic-inlaid floors of wealthy homeowners' villas, as Pompeii was a vacation community for high society. Before leaving Pompeii you will stop at a cameo factory where artisans apply skills handed down for generations, intricately carving seashell or coral into beautiful jewelry-true works of art, and a beautiful keepsake souvenir.

Your tour concludes with a 45-minute drive back to Salerno where your ship is docked awaiting your return.
